Costa Rica Liberia

Costa Rica: Liberia

Liberia Costa Rica

Costa Rica

Since the abolition of its armed forces in 1949, Costa Rica has grown into one of the most peaceful and prosperous countries in Central America, diverting funds away from the military and investing them in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and the preservation of the country's incredible natural heritage, among other things. The lush tropical forests, verdant cloud forests, active volcanoes, and pristine white sand beaches of this small country are home to a greater variety of biodiversity than the combined biodiversity of North America and Europe, including sloths and howler monkeys, as well as a dazzling array of bird and insect life in a variety of colors. The fact that it is the eco- and adventure tourism capital of the continent is no surprise given the fact that it offers white water rafting, canopy zip-line tours, and numerous other outdoor activities to participate in. More endearing, however, is the Costa Rican people's laid-back and love-filled approach to life, which is summed up in their common greeting and life philosophy: 'pura vida,' which means 'pure life' in English.

Liberia

Liberia, the capital and largest city of Guanacaste province, is – despite its lesser-known status – the country's most important tourism center, as well as a regional hub for the country's northern and western regions. An authentic Costa Rican town with beautiful natural surroundings, an interesting architectural heritage, and a rich cultural heritage are just some of the reasons that the town draws visitors from all over the world.

The Museo de Guanacaste, located in the city's historic district, hosts cultural and historical exhibitions. The Museo del Sabanero is a collection of local cowboy memorabilia, including photographs, that is open to the public. The Ermita de La Agona, a Catholic church in the colonial style with a white facade, is a popular tourist destination. The active Rincón de la Vieja Volcano and the dormant Miravalles Volcano is located in the northeastern part of the country.

Previously, during the colonial period, cacao seeds were used as a form of currency to denote value.

Best Time to Visit

Liberia's climate can be divided into two distinct seasons: the 'dry' season, which lasts from November to April, and the 'wet' season, which lasts from May to October, respectively. While the city can be visited throughout the year, the highest levels of humidity and rainfall are experienced in September and October. However, because Liberia is known to be dry in comparison to the rest of Costa Rica, there is no need to be concerned about traveling during the off-season because you will still get to enjoy plenty of sunshine hours.

The anniversary of Guanacaste's annexation is commemorated on July 25th with a series of parades, performances, and other events.

Passport / Visa

It is not necessary to obtain a visa to visit Costa Rica if you are a citizen of the European Union, as well as Australia, New Zealand, North America, and the majority of South American countries. In addition, visitors who have a valid, multiple-entry visa or residence permit issued by any country in the European Union, Canada, or the United States are permitted to enter the country visa-free for a maximum stay of 30 days. Other requirements for visitors to enter Costa Rica vary depending on their nationality, and these can be confirmed with your local consulate before traveling.

Liberia International Airport

Liberia International Airport
Photo:  Wikipedia

The Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport is approximately 13 kilometers west of Liberia's city center. Providing everything visitors to the Pacific coast and Western Costa Rica require, from ATMs and money exchange services to small food establishments and car rental companies, the airport serves as a central hub for visitors to the region. Liberia's city center, as well as the airport on the way back home, can be reached by public buses that run daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., as well as official taxis (in the red color) and private shuttle services, all of which are available for a fee.

Remember to double-check whether the departure tax for Costa Rica – US $29.00 (as of late 2018) – is already included in your airplane ticket, because if it isn't, you'll have to pay it when you arrive in-country.

Public Transport

Public bus
Public bus photo: vacationscostarica.com

Liberia is served by a comprehensive public bus system that connects the city to the capital, the white sand beaches, and the Nicaraguan border. While the Pulmitan de Liberia station is the primary hub for travel to the capital and the best beaches, the Municipal station serves destinations in the surrounding area or within Nicaragua. Both stations are located within two blocks of each other and both provide schedules, with tickets for sale onboard the buses as well as at the stations.

Most downtown attractions are within easy walking distance of one another, making getting around the city center a cinch on foot.

Taxi

Taxis
Taxis photo: ticotimes.net

Taxis are a common mode of transportation in Costa Rica, both for locals and tourists alike. Almost 14,000 taxis are available throughout the country, and you'll see them almost everywhere you go in Costa Rica.

Taking a taxi can be an excellent alternative to taking public transportation, which can be slow at times and does not provide routes to every destination in the city. It's especially convenient if you don't have to travel far, if it's raining, or if you're feeling a little too lazy to walk around in the hot sun.
