Hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th each year. The peak of hurricane season is between August 15th and September 30th.

During this period, there is a greater than average risk of hurricanes striking the Bahamas. However, most storms occur during the summer months.

In fact, the majority of tropical cyclones (storms) that strike the Bahamas occur between May and October.

There are two types of hurricanes: tropical and extratropical. Tropical storms form over warm ocean waters and move westward across the Atlantic Ocean. They usually last only a day or two. Extratropical storms form over cold water and move northward toward Canada. They typically last longer than tropical storms.

Most tropical storms that hit the Bahamas are not strong enough to be classified as hurricanes. Hurricane strength is measured by wind speed. A Category 5 storm has sustained winds of at least 157 mph.

Category 4 storms have winds of at least 120 mph. Category 3 storms have winds of at most 110 mph. Category 2 storms have winds of at most 105 mph.

Only Category 1 and weaker storms are considered hurricanes. These storms have winds of at or below 74 mph.
